கடவுள் வாழ்த்து (God's Praise)

 கடவுள் வாழ்த்து is the first of one hundred and thirty-three chapters in Thirukkural. It falls

 under the first of three books in Thirukkural:  

அறம் (virtue), பொருள் (wealth), and இன்பம்(happiness).

This chapter consists of 10 short couplets written in praise of God.

      1. அகர முதல எழுத்தெல்லாம் ஆதி பகவன் முதற்றே உலகு.

      (agara mudhala ezhuthellam aadhi baghavan mudhattre ulagu)

      Like the letter 'அ' which comes first in the Tamil language, God is the prime component of this world.

      2. கற்றதனா லாய பயனென்கொல் வாலறிவன் நற்றாள் தொழாஅர் எனின்.

        (kattradhana laaya payanenkol vaalarivan nattraal thozhaa ar enin)

       Unless someone prays to God every waking day, anything and everything they have learned is useless.

      3. மலர்மிசை ஏகினான் மாணடி சேர்ந்தார் நிலமிசை நீடுவாழ் வார்.

      (malarmisai ehginaan maanadi serndhaar nilamisai needuvaazh vaar).

       We, who have minds like flowers, will live happing for long, if we worship the Lord.

       

       4.வேண்டுதல் வேண்டாமை இலான்அடி சேர்ந்தார்க்கு யாண்டும் இடும்பை இல.    

       (vehndudhal vehndaamai ilaanadi serndhaarkku yaandum idumbai ila).

      Those who follow the footsteps of those who act not on needs or hatred shall never suffer in life.

      5.இருள்சேர் இருவினையும் சேரா இறைவன் பொருள்சேர் புகழ்புரிந்தார் மாட்டு.

       (irulser iruvinaiyum seraa iraivan porulser pugazhpurindhaar maattu).

       Shall the good and evil that arise from the darkness not be applicable to those who praise the Lord.

      6.பொறிவாயில் ஐந்தவித்தான் பொய்நீர் ஒழுக்க நெறிநின்றார் நீடுவாழ் வார்.

      (porivaayil aindhaviththaan poinneer ozhukka neri nindraar needuvaazhvaar).

      Shall the people who follow the words of those who use their five senses only for the good of others, live long.

     7.தனக்குவமை இல்லாதான் தாள்சேர்ந்தார்க் கல்லால் மனக்கவலை மாற்றல் அரிது.

      (thanakkuvamai illaadhaan thaalserndhaarkk kallaal manakkavalai maatral aridhu)

      It is rare for someone who does not worship the One who compares to no one, to feel mental relief.

      8.அறவாழி அந்தணன் தாள்சேர்ந்தார்க் கல்லால் பிறவாழி நீந்தல் அரிது.

      (aravazhi andhanan thaazhserndhaarkk kallaal piravaazhi neendhal aridhu).

      Unless one does not swim to reach the bank of 'God's feet', it is hard to reach anywhere(any other bank).

      9.கோளில் பொறியில் குணமிலவே எண்குணத்தான் தாளை வணங்காத் தலை.

     (kholil poriyil gunamilave enguththaan thaalai vanangaath thalai).

      The ones who do not worship the Lord are the same as those who have all their five senses impaired.

      10.பிறவிப் பெருங்கடல் நீந்துவர் நீந்தார் இறைவன் அடிசேரா தார்.

     (piravipp perungadal neendhuvar neendhaar iraivan adiseraa dhaar).

      None can scale the great sea called life, but those who are devoted to God's feet.
